On Thursday, May 8, KRA Speedway in Willmar, MN was able to get its racing season underway. KRA was actually fortunate in that it only lost one show before it was able to drop a green flag on racing action, but it was a close one on Thursday night. It appeared some rain-laden clouds were poised to mess up the opener; many people that arrived from the west reported driving through various amounts of the wet stuff and the radar certainly didn’t look very promising. At the track, however, no precipitation was detected and Layne Roberts’ guarantee that the weather would not be a factor was once...Get The Whole Column By Subscribing To ATD!

“Where are all my cars?” That was the question posed by Larry Smith, second year owner of Central Wisconsin (WI) Raceway near Unity, after our initial exchange of greetings on Friday. There may be several answers to that question, but only time will tell when and whether the cars will come back to CWR. In any event, I wish Smith the best in his attempt to revive the speedway. I believe his heart is in the right place...Get The Whole Column By Subscribing To ATD!

It had been my hope to begin this first weekly column with all the thrills and spills of season openers, but, alas, all I’ve got to report is chills. Lots of chills. You may already have a predetermined opinion of the global warming topic. As for me, convince me with some unusually high temps and nothing falling from the sky other than rays of sunshine. Since complaining about the weather is a moot point, the previous weekend’s temperatures (and temperament) allowed for Gillette Thunder Speedway to play host to a car show and test-n-tune event. The show-off fest commenced under the roof of the Camplex, with a healthy supply of machinery to get the saliva forming...Get The Whole Column By Subscribing To ATD!

At last, there’s some actual racing to write about! We were able to take in two opening night events, although one should have been the fourth or fifth night and the other should have been the second. This year reminds me of a year here on the tundra when our second race of the season fell on the day that should have been the mid-season championships. I guess Friday night at Red Cedar (WI) Speedway was nearly like that; nearly...Get The Whole Column By Subscribing To ATD!

Welcome back once again race fans to another edition of “On the road.” This past week proved to be a busy one with three WISSOTA AMSOIL Dirt Track Series sponsored events on the schedule. I have plenty of things to report as well as a look ahead to the coming weekend. Although Mother Nature still frowned upon Viking Speedway’s opener, we all hope the coming weekend will provide the central Minnesota race fans a....Get The Whole Column By Subscribing To ATD!

With the crappy weather we have had this spring, more people are getting desperate to hear the engines roar once again. I am one of them. With every area track in my neck of the woods cancelled for the weekend, I tried to make the best of the situation and attended the practice days at both Norman County Raceway in Ada, MN and Jamestown (ND) Speedway. Both tracks were scheduled to hold their openers over the weekend, but Mother Nature thought otherwise. The Test-N-Tune at Norman County had a nice amount of cars; those drivers that plan on running the track...Get The Whole Column By Subscribing To ATD!

The 2008 racing season got underway at Tri-Oval (WI) Speedway Friday, a month later than expected due to the extra session of winter, followed by monsoon season. It was nice to walk through the pits an hour before the show started and renew friendships with the drivers and crew members, and catch up with the off-season news. Among the smiles and handshakes though, there was an air of uncertainty that I have never...Get The Whole Column By Subscribing To ATD!

This past Friday I managed to get the day off so I took advantage of that. I made my first visit in three years to Red Cedar Speedway in Menomonie, WI for the track’s 2008 season opener. I thought the track held up really well for the opener. With all of the cold and rain we have been suffering through, you never know how the track surface at any facility will react. There was a good low groove and there was enough of a cushion to use that as well. I got a kick out of the pit meeting before the show. I didn’t catch the gentleman’s name that ran the pit meeting, but he did an excellent job of...Get The Whole Column By Subscribing To ATD!

Due to unforeseen weather events, this column is cancelled for this week. As hard as we tried to get this column into a fast, smooth and tacky reading surface, the cold, wind and rain has foiled us again. As of Monday of this week, I still had standing water in the upper right hand corner of the article, and we were unable to smooth out the ruts that plagued the bottom portion of last month’s edition. Another problem we are dealing...Get The Whole Column By Subscribing To ATD!

This month I chose a fan’s question: “As a lifelong racing fan (and 10-year subscriber to All The Dirt!), but never a driver, what prevents me from driving? It scares the daylights out of me! Is my brain defective? Or is it you drivers that have something missing between the ears? By the way, I think the addition of your insight is a great addition to the paper.” Thank you for the question and compliment...Get The Whole Column By Subscribing To ATD!
