Casino Speedway honors drivers, fans of 2009

WATERTOWN, SD (Jan. 30) - Drivers and other individuals were honored during the Casino Speedway 2009 Season Awards Banquet at 2nd Street Station on Saturday, January 30.
The honorees included the 2009 season point champions: Wade Tirrel of White in the WISSOTA Street Stock division; Kent Arment of Aberdeen, WISSOTA Modifieds; Chad Becker of Aberdeen, WISSOTA Late Models; and Marlin Snell and Aaron Meister of Milbank in Casino Cruisers.
Special award winners were Gary and Corrine Johnson of Watertown, Fans of the Year; Kevin?Konold of Clear Lake, Hidden Hero Award; Tom Boldt of Watertown, Promoters Award; and Arment, who received the Albert DeVille Memorial Award.
Boldt was honored for his help in completing the construction of the new pit area, the wall on the back straightaway and the concrete work in the Winner’s Circle - a renovation project completed prior to the 2009 season.
Sandy Benson, wife of longtime Casino Speedway promoter Earl Benson, also received a special recognition award.
Other racing honorees included:
• Rookies of the Year - Zach LaQua of Watertown, Street Stocks; David Orr of Bristol, Modifieds; Ryan Engels of Arlington, Late Models; John Petersen of White, Cruisers.
• Hard Luck (Drivers)?- Al Schmidt of Watertown, Street Stocks; Curt Kranz of Watertown, Modifieds.
• Pit Crews of the Year - Tony Konold of Clear Lake, Street Stocks; Joel Waba of Watertown, Modifieds; Chad Becker of Aberdeen, Late Models. The award is presented to the pit crews who exemplify good sportsmanship, a willingness to help their fellow competitors, keep their car in racing condition for each racing event and also represent the sport.
• Most Improved Drivers - Jason Grabow of Milbank, Street Stocks; Ryan Engels of Arlington, Modifieds; Shawn Malsam of Aberdeen, Late Models.
• Sportsmen of the Year - Curt Parliament of Hazel, Cruisers; Wade Tirrel of White, Street Stocks; Joel Waba of Watertown, Modifieds; Scott Olson of Watertown, Late Models. These were presented to the drivers who displayed good sportsmanship on the track and to their fellow competitors and also were good stewards of the sport.
Also honored were the drivers who finished second through fifth in the final season point standings per class. They included:
• Street Stock - Jason Grabow, Milbank; David Orr, Bristol; Tony Konold, Clear Lake; Troy Randall, Watertown.
• Modified - Ryan Engels, Arlington; Todd Stark, Watertown; Joel Waba, Watertown; Scott Hansen, Garden City.
• Late Model - Shawn Malsam, Aberdeen; Kent Arment, Aberdeen; Bryan Berger, Ortley; Chad Williamson, Watertown.
• Cruisers - Nathan Smith, Mobridge; Jeff McGuire, Watertown; Bradley and Andy Rossow, Florence; Mike McGuire, Watertown.
